Fort McKinney Scrapbook

A Snapshot in Time: Fort McKinney Scrapbook  is on display Spring 2018 to Spring 2020.

This exhibit tells the story of Fort McKinney through images taken by an anonymous photographer during the fort’s heyday of the 1870s – 1880s.

Utilized in the gallery are photographs and artifacts to show how Fort McKinney played a vital role in Buffalo’s history as the town sprang up around the post to provide support services.  Troops at the fort were tasked with maintaining peaceful relations with the area Native Americans, guarding stage lines, building and maintaining telegraph lines, and in 1892 were ordered to intervene during the Johnson County Cattle War.
